Description

Composition verte (eng. Green composition). Original color lithograph, 1966. Edition of 100 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper.
Serge Poliakoff was a Russian painter and lithographer, one of the most widely recognized of the abstract artists after World War who spent most of his life in Paris. After figurative beginnings, he finds his personal mode of abstract expression with dominance of color. His non-representational art images characterize mutually interwoven geometrical shapes of bold color. On Poliakoff’s understanding of color and the works he made throughout his career, artworks of Wassily Kandinsky and Sonia Delaunay had a profound impact. This is a monochrome composition with subdued tones and abstract puzzle-like connecting shapes, which gave the effect of the pure materiality of his use of color.
