Description

Hommage Beethovenu. Original colored lithograph, 1990.
Braco Dimitrijević is a Bosnian conceptual artist, who lives and works in Paris. He is one of the pioneers of conceptual art and he dealt with different media like photography, painting, graphics, sculptures, performance etc. His artwork characterizes an exploration of traditional values whether they be in the context of art history or history in general. Dimitrijević observes and chooses what he found rather then creating a new artistic interpretation, where he suggests the arbitrariness of generally accepted values through his artwork. This print was created based on photographies made at the Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris, and those artworks are logical sequel of Triptychos post Historicus series. We can see a portrait of a famous composer and a violin in a cage with two lions. This is Dimitrijevi’s fusion of culture and nature in the same place – a zoo. His motto for this series was “If one looks to the Earth from the Moon, there is virtually no distance between the Louvre and the zoo”. He expands the limits of the conceptual art and brings it into contact with the matter of life, where nature and culture came face to face and the cage question the limits of the traditional exhibition space from within. “The planet Earth is a theater of conventions which have come to be called history. It is itself the fruit of a linear development which tries to give a meaning to everything under the name of progress.”
