Poems dans le ciel (eng. Poems in the sky). Original lithograph, 1986. Edition of 100 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper.
Samuel Lewis Francis was an American artist, well known for his abstract paintings. His first inspiration and influence was abstract expressionist’s artworks, such as those from Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, Clyfford Still and especially artwork of Jackson Pollock. When he moved to Europe, Francis’ artistic development was affected by French modern art, primarily Tachisme, Asian culture and Zen Buddhism in particular. Nonetheless he was extremely active as a printmaker, creating numerous etchings, lithographs and monotypes. Poems dans le ciel from the same name series, is a graphic with the sum of his lifetime experience and skills. We can almost feel the structure of this flat surface with his focus on abstract dripping, allover instability and sensitivity to color and light.
