Description

Red cow. Original color lithograph, unknown year. Edition of E.A. (artist’s proof) signed and numbered impression on Arches paper.
Ivan Generalić was a Croatian artist and a pioneer of naive contemporary painting in Yugoslavia. Yugoslavian rural life of his life time was his biggest inspiration. Generalić’s art was a depiction of simple and expressive folk style with clear colors – peasant scenes with traditional customs, merry festivals, seasonal celebrations, tragic deaths or arduous peasant work, also included political commentaries on the social injustices of his time. Those art pieces were the study of a painting, focusing particularly on problems of the perspective and space, and colors. We can see the rural Croatian Podravina and it’s nature through Generalic’s eyes. This is a quiet and colorful composition of sumptuous, fertile fields and forests, which end somewhere far away in the hills, where the beautiful clear sky begins.
