Description

“Spezio poetica”x16. Original color woodcut, 1978. Edition of 90 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper.
Lojze Spacal was a prominent Italian painter and graphic artist, from Slovenia and exponent of the Slovenian community in Italy. His artistic achievements were made in graphic techniques, mainly in linocut and woodcut, but also many other techniques like oil, mosaic, tapestry, fresco, and various mixed techniques, for example, a combination of sculpture, relief and painting. Istra and the Karst were two regions where Spacal had sought inspiration from, and interpreted them in his own artistic language. Spacal found essential shapes, colors and compositional units in the nature and architecture and they became more stylized, reduced and simplified, so his compositions were finally completely dominated by abstraction. The elements of Istra and Karst’s nature, objects, architecture were summarized in monumental symbolic characters that created an imaginative poetic space and they brought him closer to decorative arts.
