Description

Triptychos post Historicus. Original colored lithograph and silkscreen, 1990. Edition of 60 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper.
Braco Dimitrijević is a Bosnian conceptual artist, who lives and works in Paris. He is one of the pioneers of conceptual art and he dealt with different media like photography, painting, graphics, sculptures, performance etc. His artwork characterizes an exploration of traditional values whether they be in the context of art history or history in general. Dimitrijević observes and chooses what he found rather then creating a new artistic interpretation, where he suggests the arbitrariness of generally accepted values through his artwork. This series of prints is based on the same name series of installations. The series of installations, paintings and prints Triptychos post Historicus includes paintings, of the world’s major (modern) artists, such as Kandinsky, Mondrian, Picasso, Monet, Manet etc. as well as everyday objects, fruits and vegetables. Those artworks tend to revoke divisions, classifications and categories created by institutions, presenting the same art piece as museum artwork, that represents high art, and an ordinary object, which stands for everyday life, as well as fruits or vegetables, which represents nature. In that manner, Dimitrijević revisits history of mankind and art history, trying to destroy accepted hierarchy in which art and culture would be at the top and nature at the bottom of that scale. “Our world is not made of master pieces, nor of bicycles or apples but of all these things together”, the artist says. Dimitrijević shows us Mondrian’s “Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue” which he combined with a golden egg on a cube under a table. At the bottom of the image is a writing “The table of the Aztecs.”
