  • Description

Zadar (St. Donat). Original gouache on board, unknown year.
Emerik Feješ is a Croatian-Serbian well known naive artist of urban landscapes. He became an artist in his 45th year and he painted at firs nudes, portraits, still life and genre scenes from suburban life. A few years later Feješ started exclusively with his well known motif of urban scenes. He took black and white postcards with monumental buildings as models and copied them, then magnified them, always adding something from his fantasy. Realistic appearance and the colors were subordinated to the artist’s fancy, so sometimes they were not like original landscapes. He painted the towns at the Adriatic Coast, the North Sea, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, India, etc. This is a picture of the medieval Church of St. Donatus, symbol of Zadar the town in Croatia. This is a rotunda with a tower and we can see excavations in front of the church and other colorful town’s buildings and houses in the background.
